Pay-as-you-go or Monthly Rolling Subscription Insurance for You or Someone Else’s Car

Next Step’s learner insurance is designed specifically for provisional licence holders who want extra practice before passing their test.

Available by the hour, day, week, or as a flexible monthly rolling subscription, Next Step provides coverage for exactly as long as you need until you pass your driving test.

Three reasons to choose Next Step pay-as-you-go learner insurance

  • Instant cover: Available for an hour, day, or week — ideal for fitting in some extra practice before your test.

  • Discounted cover when you pass: Get 10% off any new driver insurance after passing your test with Next Step.

  • No impact on owner’s no claims bonus: You won’t need to be added as a named driver on someone else’s policy while practicing, so their no claims bonus remains unaffected.

Three reasons to choose Next Step rolling monthly subscription

  • Flexible monthly contract: A rolling subscription you can cancel anytime without penalties — practice as much as you want, for as long as you need.

  • Discounted cover when you pass: Enjoy 10% off any new driver insurance after passing your test with Next Step.

  • No impact on owner’s no claims bonus: Learner insurance means you won’t have to be added as a named driver on someone else’s policy, protecting their no claims bonus.

What is learner driver insurance?

Learner driver insurance, also known as provisional insurance, is designed to protect you while practicing to pass your driving test outside of professional lessons.

If you’re practicing in someone else’s car, you can be insured without needing to be added as a named driver on their policy—so their no claims bonus stays safe. If you own a car, we can also cover you to practice in your own vehicle.

This insurance is valid only when you’re accompanied by someone over 21 who holds a full UK driving licence and has been driving for at least three years.

Your learner insurance ends once you pass your test, but Next Step offers a variety of flexible insurance options for new drivers after that.

Your questions answered

What is Learner Driver Insurance?

Learner driver insurance is a flexible and affordable option for learner drivers, allowing you to arrange coverage quickly for as long as you need to drive your own car or someone else’s. Whether by the hour, day, week, or on a monthly rolling subscription, Next Step provides the exact coverage you need to help you pass your test.

Who can supervise me when I drive?

You must be supervised by a driver over 21 who has held a valid EEC driving licence for at least three years. This person doesn’t have to be the car owner, but you must have the owner’s permission to insure and drive the vehicle.

Will it affect the car owner’s No Claims Bonus if I make a claim?

Any claims you make won’t impact the car owner’s No Claims Bonus, so they do not need to inform their insurer about your cover.

Can I use Learner Driver Insurance to take my driving test?

Learner driver insurance is only valid for provisional licence holders. Once you pass your test, the cover ends. After that, you can get a Next Step car insurance quote or explore our temporary car insurance options.
