What Is Buildings Insurance?

Buildings Insurance is a type of cover that protects the physical structure of your property. It covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home if it’s damaged or destroyed due to events like fire, flood, storms, subsidence, or vandalism. If you're a homeowner, landlord, or buy-to-let investor, buildings insurance is essential — and often required by mortgage lenders.

Buildings Insurance – FAQs

Buildings insurance covers the physical structure of your home — including walls, roof, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, and permanent fixtures like fitted kitchens and bathrooms. It also covers damage caused by events like fire, flood, storm, subsidence, vandalism, and more.

While buildings insurance is not legally required, it is usually mandatory if you have a mortgage. Your lender will typically require it to protect their investment. If you own your home outright, it’s still highly recommended to safeguard against unexpected damage or total loss.

Accidental damage is not always included by default. However, you can choose to add it as an optional extra to your policy. This would cover unintentional incidents like drilling through a water pipe or breaking a window by accident.

Buildings insurance covers the structure of the home, while contents insurance covers everything inside — like furniture, electronics, clothing, and personal items. If you want full protection, we recommend a combined policy that includes both.

You should insure your home for the rebuild cost, not the market value. This is the amount it would cost to rebuild the property from scratch, including labour and materials. Not sure of your rebuild cost? We can help estimate it during your quote.
